The United States government announced an investigation into 60 countries to assess whether they allow the import of goods produced with forced labor and whether they compete with American products.
Most of the countries involved lack regulations addressing this issue, not due to a lack of political will, but rather due to limitations in economic and human resources, among other factors. A ban on imports could jeopardize not only the independence of the trade policies of the economies under investigation, but also their relationships with third-party trading partners and their ability to secure supplies.
